Carers Rights Day 2024

Carers Rights Day is about raising awareness of the rights the UK’s 5.7 million unpaid carers are entitled to, and to help them get the support they need and the recognition they deserve.

Recognising your rights

Every day, 12,000 people become unpaid carers for a partner, family member or a friend – many of whom don’t see themselves as carers, often unaware of their legal rights and what they’re entitled to in terms of support and benefits.

As a carer, knowing your rights empowers you with information about what you’re entitled to. This helps you feel confident asking for what you need, as well as challenging things when your rights are not being met – whether that be in the workplace or education, in accessing health or social care, or when interacting with other professionals or at home.

What are your rights?

  • The right to unpaid Carer’s Leave
  • The right to request flexible working
  • The right to ask your GP practice to identify you as a carer
  • The right (and choice) to request a free flu jab
  • Protection against discrimination or harassment
  • Requesting a carer’s assessment
  • Being consulted when the person you care for is discharged from hospital

Carers rights

How does Carers UK work to improve carers rights?

Carers UK constantly campaigns for better rights for the UK’s unpaid carers, including securing landmark new rights for those juggling work with their caring responsibilities.

Ahead of the 2024 General Election, we called on all political parties to commit to transforming the lives of unpaid carers, should they come into power. See Carers Uk manifesto for carers.

Carers UK continue to campaign for better rights for all carers.
