'Sextortion' is a form of blackmail. It involves criminals threatening to publish sexual photos, or videos about someone. This may be to extort money or to obtain further images. Photos or recordings can be made without the victim realising or consenting.
Criminals most commonly target people through social media, or through Dating or Escort sites or apps. They may use a fake identity to befriend you online and encourage you to share photos and then threaten to send these images to your family and friends. Sextortion can be committed by individuals, but organised crime gangs are usually behind it.
